Imagine the buzz and commotion that took place at the Las Vegas Chinatown Restaurant Kung Fu. The international celebrity, singer, actress and model Amita Marie Young, more famously known as Tata Young ( ทาทายัง ) came by for a good authentic Thai dinner. For the proud Thai people, Tata Young is their own pop sensation. She is as famous in her country as Adele is in England or Justin Timberlake in America. And like them, she also has an international following.
Though Young is only 32 years old, she has been involved in the Thai music scene since the tender age of 11 when she won against 5,300 others in the Thailand Junior Singing Contest. That critical moment jump started her on her meteoric career, starting with her first album, that was released in 1996 “Amita Tata Young” which sold a million copies in just five months, breaking all recording records in Thailand at the time. Since then, The Thai Teen Sensation Tata Young released eight albums, including three that was sung in English, and five singing in her native tongue Thai. One of the resulting English album debut with Columbia Records. The album,“I Believe,” was remarkable in that over 300,000 units were sold in Japan alone. She has already sold over 12 million albums and represents a newly-found energy and change for the Asian music industry.
In addition to being a teen sensation pop star in Thailand, Tata Young, also acted in three films, “The Red Bike Story“, which led to Tata receiving the Best Actress Award in Thailand, “O-Negative“, and “Wick of the Candle“. Her notoriety also led to the People’s Republic of China nominating her to represent her country Thailand in the 1997 Hand over of Hongkong Ceremonies. Tata would later receive the prestigious “Golden Pikkanes God Award” given by the Musical Artist Association of Thailand, which is the equivalent of receiving the Grammy Award given out here in the United States, thus becoming the youngest Thai artist to receive such an award.
